Medium Rare and Back Again: A Middle Earth Cookbook

November 21, 2012

Dear readers, I am thrilled to announce that I’ve launched a fundraiser, via Kickstarter, to allow me to write a cookbook based on food from Middle Earth!

Not actually my kitchen

Me, during the filming of the Kickstarter video!

Wow!  What will it entail?

We’re aiming for at least $10,000 by December 20th, and that will allow me to make a free online cookbook, with print copies available as well, of at least 30 recipes – researched and sourced from Tolkien’s world.  But the more we raise, the more I can do, such as:

  • Many more recipes
  • Better photography (translation:  I’ll hire someone to do it) and art (ditto)
  • Online videos where I’ll teach some of the most popular recipes from the book
  • eBook format
  • Much much more!

Scroll down on the Kickstarter page to “What if you overshoot your funding goal, Heath?” for a full-for-now list of the additional rewards!

How can I help?

Well, of course, any and all pledges, large and small, are very much appreciated.  After just a single day, we’ve already passed $3700!  But remember, the initial target is only the beginning; and soon, we will have additional pledge rewards designed – t-shirts and aprons and the like!  If you’ve pledged, you can always add extra pledge rewards later on!

And whether or not you can donate, you can spread the word!  Link to this page, or directly to the Kickstarter page, and encourage people to pledge and to spread the word!  Phrases like “Please help fund this Super Cool Project” and the like are a big help, even above and beyond just sharing the link.  You can also follow me on social media – share my facebook links, retweet my tweets and Tolkien Professor Corey Olsen’s tweets, and email your friends!  I’ll include a sample email below, if you want to copy and paste it!

This project will get better and better the more we can get the word out – so spread it far and wide!  And remember, even if you think a certain friend might not have much interest in Tolkien or cooking, they probably have friends who do, so don’t be shy! :)

Hey <Friends>,

I just saw an awesome Kickstarter campaign to fund a Middle Earth cookbook, and thought you might be interested!  This guy is trying to raise at least $10,000 in a month (though some of the goals he has if he gets more funding look seriously cool.)  It looks like he’s trying to stay true to the books, and has already done some yummy Tolkien recipes on his blog.

It looks like the project is already getting funded pretty quickly – I’ve chipped in and thought you and some of your friends might be interested also.

Cheers,

  3. Hi Heath– I missed the boat on Kickstarting this, but would love to buy a copy and spread the word among my other Tolkien geek friends. Please let me know how to proceed!

    • Hey Kim! Great to hear from you. I’ll be setting up a PayPal link in early January (awaiting the paperwork from incorporation, then we’re off and running) and will definitely be posting here as well as on the Dillicious twitter and facebook accounts, and the KS page itself, with instructions for supporting the project going forward! So check back soon!

Are you still playing Trivia these days?

      • Hi Heath,
Sadly, I haven’t played Trivia in a while, but I still think of it fondly. Just had a baby (our second) on 12/19, so I’m unlikely to play the upcoming contest, either. How about you? Look forward to being able to order your book! Take care,
        Kim

        • Hi Heath,
Any update on when and how your book will be available? Geeky inquiring minds want to know!
          Kim
